Can I really be fired for my political beliefs?

My boss who is a republican said he might have to let me go. He said some Bullsh!t about tough times and the economy. I know he is a liar because I hate republicans. He is even firing other people as well. Once he even made a racist Joke about Mexicans. Should I make up some stories about him being racist and report him to the police?
